Round or rectangular dining table? Seats, space and what fits

Same seats, same area, different shape

Here is the space each table needs with chairs pulled out on every side.

Seats Table Space needed Area
4 Round, Ø100 cm 2.8 × 2.8 m about 7.8 m²
4 Rectangle, 120 × 80 cm 3.0 × 2.6 m about 7.8 m²
6 Round, Ø130 cm 3.1 × 3.1 m about 9.6 m²
6 Rectangle, 180 × 90 cm 3.6 × 2.7 m about 9.7 m²
6 Oval, 180 × 90 cm 3.6 × 2.7 m about 9.7 m², with softer corners to walk past

Where people walk behind seated guests, allow about 110 cm instead of 90 cm on that side, and add 20 cm to the figure.

Key point Don't choose by area. Measure the two sides of your dining space. If they are close to equal, a round table uses them best. If one side is much longer, a rectangle or an oval fits better.

When a round table works best

  • A square corner of an open living and dining room. The table sits in the middle and chairs can pull out all around.
  • Four to six people who talk. Everyone faces each other, and nobody is stuck at an end.
  • A space people walk around. No corners at hip height, which helps with children.

Check the base. A central pedestal leaves room for knees all around, and lets you squeeze in one more chair. Three or four legs fix where chairs can go.

When a rectangle or an oval works best

  • A long, narrow dining area, for example between the kitchen and the living room.
  • Six people often, eight sometimes. A 180 cm table seats six, and eight when the base leaves room at each end.
  • A table that also works as a desk. A long side against the wall frees the room during the day.

An oval keeps the seats of a rectangle but has no sharp corners where people pass, which helps when the table sits in the way to the kitchen or the balcony.

Against the wall on weekdays

A 120 × 80 cm rectangle pushed against a wall still seats three or four, and needs only about 3.0 × 1.7 m. Pull it out for guests. A round table against a wall seats two or three and leaves an awkward gap.

Good to know Tape the table and the pulled-out chairs on the floor before you choose. Every piece page has a "View to scale" drawing with the exact size of the top and the base.

Questions

Does a round table save space?

Not in area. For the same number of seats, a round table and a rectangle need about the same floor area once chairs are pulled out. A round table fits a square space better; a rectangle fits a long one.

How many people fit at a Ø130 cm round table?

Six. A Ø100–110 cm round seats four, and a Ø150 cm round seats six comfortably, eight at a squeeze.

Round or rectangular table for a small flat?

If the table can stand free with room all around, a Ø100 cm round seats four in about 2.8 × 2.8 m. If it has to go against a wall, choose a rectangle.

Is an oval table better than a rectangle?

It seats about the same number of people and needs the same space, but has no sharp corners. That helps where people walk past the table.

What base is best for a round table?

A central pedestal leaves the most room for knees and chairs. Legs at the edge fix where chairs can go.
